Last week. This week:
- “Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)” by Billy Joel, guessed by Betty
They held a concert out in Brooklyn - “When My Time Comes” by Dawes
As if something that’s written should be taken as true - “Rain City” by Lucy Schwartz
I’m stuck in a cycle and I canΓ’β¬β’t get out - “No One’s Gonna Love You” by Band of Horses
We are the ever-living ghost of what once was - “Nebraska” by Chrissie Hynde and Adam Seymour (orig. Bruce Springsteen)
I killed everything in my path - “One Hundred Days” by Flick
Thought it’d slowly just slip away - “King of Spain” by Moxy Fruvous
Telling my jokes to the OPEC leaders - “Vampire” by Antsy Pants
So I’m no more satanic yeah yeah - “Jesus Was a Crossmaker” by Rachael Yamagata (orig. the Hollies)
He wages war with the devil, a pistol by his side - “So Damn Happy” by Loudon Wainwright III
It’s that humdrum novel old black magic
Can you guess the bands or artists that sang these lyrics? Go on, I know you can! Good luck!
#1 is by Billy Joel. I think the title is “Miami 20somethingorother”? “Miami 2060?” Or it’s “Seen the Light Go Out on Broadway.” One of those is the title, and one of those is in parentheses next to it. I just don’t know which is which. π
Is there some kind of theme in those last three?
You’re so very close that I’m just going to give it to you.
And themes, while entirely unintentional — these are random, whatever my iPod shuffle offers — do sometimes seem to emerge. Sometimes, I imagine these ten lyrics as a sort of weird, fever-dreamlike story.
Ah, 2017! I was only a few decades off! Man, though… That’s only six years away. You’d better start getting ready.
(P.S.: I knew it was “Lights,” not “Light.” That part was a typo. π
It’s all lyrics from the same Bob Dylan song.
As it happens — and I’m just going to throw this out there for everyone — there’s not a Dylan song in the lot.
That reminds me of back when I used to work for a local weekly independant newspaper. I sat next to the music guy and every week he’d get a list of the bands playing at the local emo kid club.
It ALWAYS read like the poetry of some untalented Depeche Mode teenager.
“I Went Into the Woods”
“Angels Were Crying”
“These Wings Could Not Fly”
“I Will Sulk Today in Sadness That is Unhappy”
You get the idea.
Wow, I’m the only one who got one of this batch! (Well, sort of.) I feel special. π
