Wednesday various

  1. I just read the first few pages of that book whose review sparked all that madness. This sentence at the top of page 2 almost made me stop there:

“Detailed knowledge of its layout would stand her in good stead.”
    or
“[Main character] simply sat and waited for this inept, insecure ranting to pass. The [aliens’] language had nothing to do with the fact that they shared the same internal organs with humans. But her boss had to get his bias out of his system.”

  2. I thought it looked really rough around the edges — understandably, for what was essentially a presentation reel — but also like nothing else out there. Science fiction, and especially space-based science fiction, is still way too attached to the Star Trek model. (Which is a fine model, but not when it’s the only game in town.)

Slingers could very well end up being a huge mess, but for now I’m really intrigued.

Oh yeah, the original review itself seems pretty even-handed and fair, especially in light of how unhinged Sams grows in subsequent comments. It seems spot-on, given the actual writing in question. If that writing, or the writing in her posts, isn’t enough to steer you clear of the book, then there’s always her insulting and antagonistic behavior.

It really is hard to take anyone seriously once they hold up Harriet Klausner as the ideal reviewer.
