  1. First, do you even have stairs in Manhattan? I thought everything needed an elevator. Second, sure, it got people’s attention on the first day, but was this a sustained response over time? Were the results replicated in other locations? Third, hearing everyone tramp up and down a piano all day would drive me nuts.

  2. We have plenty of stairs in Manhattan, including the ones I walk up and down nearly every day at Penn Station. We also have escalators, and maybe elevators, but those are difficult or impossible to find for the subway. (There must be some, or there would be discrimination lawsuits, I’m sure, but I always take the stairs whenever I ride the subway.)

    And obviously this isn’t a sustainable thing — neither for the commuters, who would grow bored or annoyed, nor for the people who built the piano, who may not have the resources to keep it clean and operational. But on a single day, with good weather, it would really be a lovely little surprise.
