When did I become such a big Doctor Who fan?

Russell T. Davies gets a lot of flak sometimes — not all of it undeserved — but the man can still knock one out of the park when he sets his mind to it. This might also have been Catherine Tate’s best work on the show to date. We’ll see if the two-parter that ends the season — and Davies’ run as head writer and showrunner — can deliver the goods as well.

  1. I think this one takes some thematic elements that he’s handled less than expertly in the past and really does them properly, so I was pretty pleased with it, just on that basis alone. Add in a fairly clever plot device that turns a production bug into a feature and plays with established continuity in interesting ways, yet another top-notch performance by Tate, and an ending that kind of got my adrenaline pumping, and… Well, I wouldn’t put it in the running for the best of the new series, but it’s a very successful episode and a good setup for whatever we’ve got coming in the next two weeks. (And judging by the previews, I think the answer to that is “everything.” :))

I really am hoping the finale delivers.
