Torch songs

Whoa, was that what I think it was? A genuinely good episode of Torchwood?

I’ve only seen the first episode of the second season, and I have no idea if it stays this good, gets better or worse, or if it’s just the novelty of James Marsters’ guest appearance, but that was actually kind of cool.

I don’t remember ever thinking that about Torchwood.

  1. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by it this season. It’s still far from perfect, and personally I do think that first episode is the best of the season so far (although there’s a lot of room for personal disagreement on that one), but it’s doing a lot more things right, especially when it comes to the characters. Last season, my opinion was that it was mostly pretty bad, but still entertaining (if sometimes only in a “point and laugh at the characters” kind of way). This season, it’s a lot closer to actually being, well, a good show.

  2. Okay, I’m not completely caught up yet, but I’ve seen a few more episodes. And agreed, still far from perfect — and even a little too far from the highs of that first ep — but I think they’re finally turning into something other than the dreary, over-sexed and not terrifically clever Doctor Who.

And Freema Agyeman really is as good as I remember.
