I’m sort of half joking when I say it, but the frustrating thing about movies is that they’re not collaborative, all you do is sit there on your ass and watch them. Books are very collaborative, they invite the reader to do half the work, but the problem with books is, they’re so full of words. What I like about comics is that they invite the reader in to collaborate just like a book, but they move with the acceleration of a film, and that makes them extremely fun to play in.

The funny thing is, I was just talking about this today. We were discussing “Hard Candy”, which I liked overall as a film, but the ending pissed me off because it didn’t explain anything and you were left wondering what the deal was. My coworker said something to the effect that you were supposed to draw your own conclusions and fill in the blanks yourself. I, half-joking, went off on a rant of how I don’t like movies that make you think. I have to think all the time and when I want to watch a movie, I do want to just sit on my ass and watch. That’s obviously not entirely true, as I do enjoy thought provoking films. I’m just saying, sometimes there’s something to be said for switching off the brain for two hours of mindless entertainment…
Hmm. That’s actually one of things I particularly liked about Hard Candy, which I saw a few weeks back myself — that it doesn’t spell out everything and does leave you with questions. That said, I didn’t find the ending particularly confusing or wanting for explanation. I was pretty clear on what happened.
There is something to be said for mindless entertainment. And for its opposite.
