I’m not watching

Apparently there was some kind of…football game going on tonight?

Gone are the days when I’d even pretend to care — I mean, good for the Giants, the underdog, and everything, I guess, but seriously, I don’t care. I didn’t watch a minute of the game, and I had even less interest in watching the advertisements. I know the news media spent a week pounding into our heads how they’re the real reason everybody tunes in nowadays, how a record number of billions have been spent on advertising — mostly by companies that have really deep pockets already, but sure, okay — and how we just couldn’t wait to see what those kooky nuts in marketing had dreamed up for us this year.

But really, honestly, I don’t care.

  1. I managed not to even know the Giants were playing until after they won. I am somewhat irrationally proud of this fact.

And I simply cannot wrap my brain around the idea of anybody actually wanting to watch a commercial, no matter how slick and high-profile it is.

  2. Honestly, I mind the commercials a lot less than all the hype surrounding them. Seriously, shouldn’t CNN have better things to do than shill for Pepsi and Anheuser-Busch?

  3. So, am I the only one who reads this blog who gives a damn about sports? Must be.

But I am totally with you on the commercial thing. Not only is the level of commercialism pretty sickening, but the quality of the actual ads didn’t even live up to the hype — or even the quality of past Super Bowl ads. Besides, here in California, it seemed like most of the ads were for the Indian gaming initiatives on tomorrow’s ballot anyway.

    Helluva game, though.

  4. I don’t dislike football, or sports in general. I just don’t follow any, and I didn’t care enough about this game to watch.

It does seem, from all accounts, that if I was going to watch a Super Bowl, this would have been the one to watch.
