Doctor Who?

Mike Sterling on Doctor Who:

Maybe I’m just reading too much into the performance, but Tennant’s Doctor feels a little more alien to me…there’s the occasional expression, or pose, or look in his eye that tells you “this isn’t a normal person.” Which is good, since the Doctor isn’t a normal person, and the occasional reminder that this character is not a human being, and is dangerous to be around, is what gives Doctor Who that additional level of gravitas that keeps it from being just another sci-fi superhero fightin’ the aliens-of-the-week.

  1. I think the Doctor’s always sort of had that… Some actors do capture that better than others, but I’m not sure I’d rank Tennant #1 on that list. Sylvester McCoy, now there was a Doctor that could really manage those moments where you’d suddenly think, “Holy crap, he really is an ancient, alien presence from a species that’s forgotten more cosmic secrets than we’ll ever know.” Usually these came immediately after he’d just been capering around making stupid puns and playing the spoons, or something, which, IMO, tended to make them all the more impressive. 🙂
