For no particular reason, I wound up only watching a single movie last weekâin this case, Leave the World Behind.
It feels very much of a piece with Sam Esmail’s television work, which works very much in favor of the paranoid thriller he’s crafting, but which did sometimes leave me scratching my head if all this style added up to anything. It probably is something of a spoiler to say that the movie does not resolve anything, which might be something of a weakness, but which also feels very much baked into it from the start. It’s not wholly satisfying, but it is a lot, often very tense, full of striking moments and really strong performances across the board. |
