So I watched a little of the Oscar ceremony, then lost interest and drifted over to a Torchwood episode and the Sunday crossword. I had a little informal pool going with a couple of friends, which kept me tuned in for although a while, although clearly I didn’t win. The only moment I’m genuinely sorry to have missed was the yearly “In Memoriam,” but I suspect it will find its way to YouTube very shortly.

I would say you didn’t do too badly, I noticed at least 9 correct, and that’s just off the top of my head. I don’t know what won Best Doc, myself, but I think you did alright.
I thought the Oscar ceremony this year was much better than most, mainly because they didn’t try to over-produce it, and just kept it low-key. That, and having a genuinely funny host.
But Brad Renfro totally got the shaft by being left out of the “In Memoriam” montage.
Was Heath Ledger, or anyone else who’s died in 2008, included? If they were, I agree that Renfro should have been included as well. I’m just not sure what the cut-off date for the segment is.
According to the opening title of the montage, the dates were Feb. 1, 2007, to Jan. 31, 2008 (meaning Roy Scheider gets included next year). Predictably, Heath Ledger was included at the end to ensure he got the loudest applause. Interestingly enough, Jack Valenti only got a lukewarm ovation. Serves him right. Ha!
(Sorry to seem mean-spirited about the dead, but I never liked the man.)
Renfro should have made the cut, then. He may not have been the biggest star, and his death made have been an accidental heroin overdose, but leaving him out because of that is not really the Academy’s (or whoever puts together that montage) call to make. Here’s hoping the snub was unintentional.
And I never much liked Valenti either. His replacement, who I caught a little of last night, seems much more likable…but then, maybe less effective at the job because of it, I don’t know.
At least I got to see the Academy’s tribute to binoculars and periscopes.
That is a shame. You’d think the Hollywood set would be a little less critical of drug abuse in general. Pot, have you met kettle?
Of course, there’s always this montage:
