My July 2007 mix:

  1. “Wonder Wheel” by BomberGirl and the Mechanic
  2. “I Can’t Decide” by Scissor Sisters
  3. “Life Is a Rock (But the Radio Rolled Me)” by Reunion
  4. “Old Virginia Block” by Devon Sproule
  5. “Modern Love” by Starlit
  6. “Love Song” by Sara Bareilles
  7. “Listening Man” by the Bees
  8. “Ocean of Noise” by Arcade Fire
  9. “More Shopping” by Bran Van 3000
  10. “Dream On” by Kelly Sweet
  11. “Heels on Fire” by Sargasso Trio
  12. “Because We’re Dead” by Slow Club

One-on-one trades, if anybody’s interested.

Next year, I’m definitely dropping the 12-song-a-month limit, though.

  1. Because that would be the sensible thing to do?

Honestly, there’s this insane, obsessive part of my brain that thinks, I can’t change the rules now. That would be like cheating. Or admitting defeat. Or something.

But you’re right, there is absolutely no reason to continue with the 12-song limit other than that’s what I’ve been doing from the start. Which, because I am just a little bit insane, is reason enough for me to continue doing it.

I mean, I have made it work, more or less, for over half a year now. I might as well continue doing it, right…?

Self-imposed limits can really help in bringing focus to a mix and creating some kind of connecting theme. But when the theme is already there, and it’s just “some songs I really liked listening to this past month,” then the limit is a little foolish.

So in 2008. I’m definitely going to continue doing this next year. It’s a lot of fun, especially when the mixes do come together organically and I can piece together their disparate sources. But next year, some mixes will have 12, some will have 20, some more, some less.

    Next year.

  2. I’m usually not one for hard and fast rules, but my own monthly mixes have recently taken on a mind that isn’t mine. I have found myself yearning to make a second mix each month. This second mix (which I’ve done twice now and have plans for at least three more) would have (and has had) song limits, themes, and has been done entirely by me.

I have found this more satisfying than I expected, so I do understand what you are saying.

Well no matter what you do, I have enjoyed listening to your mixes. I’m sure that won’t change.

  3. I dunno. Did you have it stuck in your head for two weeks like I did? Because that was kind of disturbing. 🙂
